So I finally got around to watching Little Miss Sunshine tonight, and wowee! Why didn’t anyone tell me Steve Carell was in this movie?! Geez! What a great film! I really liked how the “winners and losers” theme that kept being mentioned was also very apparent in the lives of the characters. I didn’t even realize that until Shane’s big explosion where he called out the whole family for being nothing but a lot of losers. While so incredibly hurtful, it was also pretty accurate in terms of the dad’s binary definition of people.

Then when the actual pageant happened and everyone else realized how they nor Olive really “fit in” (though that was okay), I began to appreciate the movie more and more. As the movie ended with them driving off, it was really great to see how even though, yeah sure, they were a bunch of losers, they were happy with who they were and stuck together as a family. The conversation Frank and Shane had on the pier near the end also stuck out to me as really incredible. If you skip all the struggles in your life you’ll never grow as a person.

Freikin fantastic.
